Internet nonsense

On page 313 of Practical Phonetics and Phonology, 3rd edition, we read this:

"You don't need us to tell you that the Internet is a wonderful source of information, education and entertainment. And it's especially useful for many aspects of phonetics, phonology, and dialect research. Furthermore, most of what it provides for the student phonetician comes absolutely free of charge. Be warned, though! […] You have to keep your wits about you when using web resources…".

Absolutely true! What do you make of this language panel, for example, which I found posted on the Facebook page of a local English language school?

As you know, all the words spelt wh- above are normally pronounced with plain w in contemporary RP (so one could say that the h in these words is 'silent'), but this is not true of Scottish English and much Irish English which usually have hw- (or ʍ-, if you prefer). Some Americans also pronounce wh-words with hw-. (Watch this video clip and/or check with Merriam-Webster Online.)

Also, t can be sounded in often (see the LPD preference poll on p.560) and Christmas (see LPD, p.145, and CEPD, p.89), although the latter is more commonly ˈkrɪs-, ˈkrɪz-. And -t(ch) in witch, watch, butcher, scratch, and match is not 'silent' but is regularly pronounced

Here's another picture:

This is taken from this website. The caption to this picture posted on my Facebook page by a colleague of mine reads:

"LIKE if you get it. If you don't, it may be helpful to know that in English, "air" and "heir" are near homophones".

The words air and heir in standard English pronunciation are not near homophones, they ARE homophones!

Finally, a panel on elision:

Here the t in night can never be elided, but it can be replaced by a glottal stop: night never sounds like nigh/Nye in English! (For more on this, you might want to take a look at this article by John Wells.)

"LIKE if you get it. If you don't, it may be helpful to know that in English, "air" and "heir" are near homophones".

('Mettete "MI PIACE" se capite la battuta. In caso contrario vi sarà utile sapere che in inglese air e heir sono quasi-omofoni.')

Le parole air e heir nella pronuncia standard non sono quasi-omofoni, ma COMPLETAMENTE omofoni!

L'ultima foto riguarda l'elisione. Qui la t di night non può mai essere elisa, ma può essere sostituita dal glottal stop: night non rima mai con nigh/Nye in inglese! Questo argomento è stato già trattato a lungo da John Wells in un suo articolo.

Pope Francis' prayers

As some of you will know, besides teaching English Phonetics at the Università degli Studi della Tuscia, Viterbo, I also teach English pronunciation at the IPASVI Nursing College of Rome. The IPASVI Nursing College of Rome is just a stone's throw from St Peter's Basilica, which allowed me last Tuesday evening to get to St Peter's Square just in time to see the black smoke billowing from the top of the Sistine Chapel, indicating that no pope had been chosen.

The next day, Wednesday 13th March, Cardinal Bergoglio of Argentina became Pope Francis, the new pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. As I was watching the BBC's live coverage of the papal conclave in Rome I was taken aback by the sheer incompetence of the Italian interpreter whose task it was to translate the pope's first speech into English. The interpreter made a complete dog's breakfast of the words of the Lord's Prayer, the Hail Mary and the Glory be to the Father (read here and/or watch this clip). These are probably the most traditional prayers in Christianity and are usually taught to young Catholics in their childhood.

Below you can find both the English and the Italian versions of these prayers together with one possible (mainly) phonemic transcription into contemporary RP and Standard Italian pronunciation.

The vowels of Standard Italian

In our article on the pronunciation of Italian (see my blog of the 4th of February 2013), Beverley Collins, Inger Mees, and I define the type of accent we describe as a model for non-native learners "based on a geographically central variety (including the city of Rome) but lacking marked regional features" (p.229).

After listing and describing the consonant sounds of Standard Italian, together with such phenomena as 'raddoppiamento' (consonant doubling) and 'raddoppiamento (fono)sintattico', we focus on the characteristics of the 7 steady-state vowels i, e, ɛ, a, ɔ, o and u (p.232).

Perhaps not many people know that ɛ and ɔ, the vowels traditionally described as occurring in Standard Italian only in stressed syllables, are also normally found in unstressed ones. It is very often the case that when a word whose most prominent syllable contains either i or u at its peak ends in the letters -e or -o, these are normally pronounced ɛ and ɔ respectively, especially if the word is at the end of an intonation group. (In connected speech a sound indeterminate or intermediate between e and ɛ, and between o and ɔ is also to be heard.) So mito ('myth'), for example, is generally ˈmiːtɔ, although ˈmiːto is by no means impossible. Similarly, luce ('light') can be both ˈluːtʃɛ and ˈluːtʃe, although the former is probably more common.

On the DOP website I listened to the recorded pronunciation of the following words: lungo ('long'), Ciampino (the name of the second biggest airport in Rome), and Cristo ('Christ'). The first word is pronounced ˈluŋɡo, but the second and third are clearly tʃamˈpiːnɔ and ˈkɾistɔ respectively.

In this video about Pope Benedict's final moments as leader of the Roman Catholic Church, we hear the journalist pronounce libro ('book') as ˈliː(b)bɾɔ (0:05), (in) punto ('sharp') ˈpuntɔ (0:08), Cristo ('Christ') ˈkɾistɔ (0:14), ultime (parole) ('last (words)') ˈultimɛ (2:23, 2:24, 2:26), and saluto ('greeting') saˈluːtɔ (2:37).

Finally, in this other clip, Mediaset newsreader Alberto Bilà can be heard to pronounce the surname of the leader of the Five Star Movement Beppe Grillo as ˈɡɾillɔ (0:25).

Our section on Italian pronunciation also includes information about stress which, as you know, is often tricky in polysyllabic words (think of salubre ('healthy'), for example). Besides that, you'll find some indications concerning connected speech as well (p.233). The whole article is written from an objective point of view, description rather than prescription being the approach advocated by phoneticians and phonologists.

Next post: Monday 18th March.
